The Abbey and War Cemetery
Overlooking the surroundings from the top of Monte Cassino, the Benedictine Abbey has been rebuilt almost from scratch after it was bombed to the ground by the Allies during World War II, in a battle against German troops. The Abbey is only opened to the public for half a day, and with its spectacular views, and priceless treasures this is a great opportunity to see the Benedictine order of monks going about their daily routines.
In this area, you can also find a Commonwealth War Cemetery as well as a Polish War Cemetery, in these, lies the bodies of young men who lost their lives in the battle of Monte Cassino. The War Graves Commission looks after the Commonwealth War Cemetery, and anyone looking for a particular plot will find that it is very easy to track down names. Visiting the cemetery is a touching experience that gives you the feeling of the horror of war.
