Town with the same name of the peninsula is situated on a tufaceous terrace, overlooking the sea on the northern slopes of the mountains Lattari, including gardens, vast plantations of citrus and major hotels, alternating with typical mansions. Sorrento emerged as a popular resort in the mid-700, welcoming notable visitors. It seems that the name “Sorrento” is derived from the name “Sirenia” perhaps formerly given to the area for the supposed identification of Sorrento with the place of the presence of the sirens, legendary creatures that the Homeric tradition handed down to us as a half woman half fish, who bewitched the sailors with their songs, making them thus wrecked against the rocks.
An internationally renowned tourist destination and famous for its incomparable beauty and mild climate, the town on the southern coast of the Sorrento Peninsula, known as the Amalfi Coast, is closed by the foothills of the mountains Lattari. White houses and narrow streets, many of them with steps, characterize the village, a typical example of Mediterranean architecture. It is an archiepiscopal seat. The Cathedral, dedicated to St. Andrew, is the most impressive building of Amalfi: a rare beauty, built in sec. IX, refurbished in 1203 in the Arab-Norman forms, and restored several times, has a solemn steps to the side of which rises the bell tower (XII-XIII), which preserves intact the polychromy, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the area. The Valley, for its wildlife and environmental characteristics, is now a nature-oriented reserve, declared a World Heritage Site, and will enchant on pleasant walks.
We will begin at St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, very famous for its Michelangelo’s “Pietà” and the beautiful Bernini Pulpit, then we move to Piazza Navona, where to admire the beautiful Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, one of the best examples of a a Baroque masterpiece. Legend says that if you throw a coin into the fountain you will be back to Rome.
